Live Your Passion!

Passion: Awakening

It seems a bit Zen but the way to make money online is not necessarily to try to make money online. I love what I’m doing. Developing a blog, studying online marketing tools and affiliate programs is a blast. It’s a great deal of work but it’s a joy, not a chore. The skills and knowledge being developed are being transfered to my economics students as they engage in projects like building an online business website or exploring their own interests to create a concept for a home-based business. Consequently, even if there was no prospect for monetizing my efforts, much if not all of these activities would still be a part of my econ lesson planning. However, blogging and developing online communities opens the doors to opportunity as people connect and give value for value whether it be knowledge, tangible goods or services. Blogging is essentially the communication of your passion in a way that creates a community of interest and your own personal brand. If doing so hits a niche market then your efforts can be monetized as a by-product of doing what you love to do. Gary Vaynerchuk, author of Crush It ( A book I highly recommend as an intro to online marketing ) places passion at the center of all your efforts to communicate online what drives you day in and day out. Who knows where your passion can lead. Are you a passionate fisherman with an encyclopedic knowledge of bait? Here’s an excerpt from Gary’s book Crush It.

What if you don’t have a hard business instinct? Don’t worry; skills are cheap, passion is priceless. If you’re passionate about your content and you know it and do it better than anyone else, even with few formal business skills you have the potential to create a million-dollar business. Here’s why: Let’s say you love to fish, and you happen to know a load about worms. In fact, you’re embarrassed at how much you like worms and like to talk about worms. But there’s now way you can make money on worms, right? Wrong. You can use the Internet to build a platform where you can talk about worms to your heart’s content. Passion is contagious. If you channel it into creating amazing content and distribute that content using the social media tools I discuss in this book, someone like me who rocks at business development will evnetually find it and become a fan. The day I hear you say that you can use a particular kind of worm to catch 80 percent more bass than you might otherwise, I’m going to see the business opportunity and contact you.

As I blog about my own journey as a teacher on a mission to market online I am creating a brand and a community. If it pays off financially great. I’ll be able to buy that classroom set of laptops and take a nice vacation. But if all it does is help my students learn valuable skills and inspire some educators to crack the comfort zone and try something new and exciting, then it will have been worth the effort.

What’s your passion? What would you bring online to fire up the crowd?
