Politics Aside – It Is Up To Each Of Us

As I look at the electoral map the score stands Obama 147 – Romney 149. There exists an apocalyptic aura around this election as though the election of the wrong presidential candidate will trigger cataclysmic social and economic upheaval, not to mention extreme geologic activity and possible galactic instability. This is not to downplay the very real differences between Americans about how this country should be run. But many of the feared consequences of fiscal mismanagement are now impossible to avoid in my opinion. Yet whoever wins this election I am optimistic about our future.

One of the reasons for this optimism is what I have experienced here at WordPress. It is a pleasure and a privilege to interact with a community of such diversity, intelligence and grace. Here we appreciate the contributions of others without judgement. Here we learn from each other with gratitude. Here we make friendships with others from around the world as if we were chatting with a neighbor.

The public political debates in our country have been increasingly divisive. Yet there are communities of cooperation developing through social media with the aim of improving opportunities for everyone. To increase the reach of such communities whether they be bloggers or MeetUp groups requires that we work with each other whether we be Democrats, Republicans, Environmentalists, Socialists, Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, Athiests, and the list goes on.

It has been an absolute joy to meet Tanushree over at Charity Spring, Quinn and Jonathon at Life Out of the Box, Loretto Leary at Briese! Briese! Extra! Extra! and all the others whose blogs I follow. I hope to develop a whole new set of relationships through Meet Up groups involving entrepreneurship and marketing. I want to promote others and help them succeed just as I do in my classroom every day. When I consider these new connections it puts into perspective the politics that has bombarded us weary constituents this campaign season.

I had to step away from the blog for a while and as I write Pres. Obama has been declared the winner. Now we can put aside the rhetoric, at times vitriol, and get down to the business of helping each other improve the quality of life for everyone we encounter.

We may have a rough road ahead economically. We may have to accept a reduced standard of living materially speaking. I honestly do not believe any President can do much about where we are headed economically. But what we are gaining is far more valuable. At least in the U.S. I think we’re learning that the material stuff just isn’t important. We will also learn that we have more control of our economic future than we now believe.

Warmth and Peace to all of you.

Hi Robert, I just stopped by to see what you are about, and I’m glad I did. I liked your ‘about’ column and your optimism is very refreshing and tends to cause me to reconsider our future. Too often all we get are polarized and divisive ideas, and no one seems to want to cooperate with one another or compromise a little to achieve an attractive goal. …but maybe that can change. 🙂

    Lord bless you,

    Eddie
