We balance on a beam
one foot, then the next
gracefully, or not,
keep the eyes just ahead,
look one way
or the other
and balance is lost.
Focus on the horizon
past or future,
a flailing of the arms
vertigo, a bruising
fall,
but eyes just ahead
steady and firm,
gracefully or not
we are balanced on
a beam
